Popol Vuh is one of the most valuable legacies of pre-Hispanic Mayan thinking with a historical and spiritual content.  It is a narrative that tries to explain the origin of the world, civilization and the different phenomena that occur in nature.

Written in the mid-16th century in the Quiché tongue with Latin characters by an anonymous author, it was found in the early 18th century by the Dominican monk Francisco Ximénez, in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.

The monk, an expert in native languages, made a copy of the original and translated it into Spanish.

Popol Vuh is divided into four parts that make reference to the origin of the world and the creation of man, the adventures of two semi-gods and the region of death, and finally it gives news of the origin of the native peoples of the region.

Did you know that Popol Vuh has great historical and spiritual value.

It has been considered a sort of Bible of this Central American Quiché group and represents a much-appreciated, fundamental source for the study of Guatemala’s ancient Mayan culture, since it offers a complete overview of its ideas on the creation of the world and humanity, history, customs, legends and myths.
